I know! So the Statue of Liberty isn’t on Manhattan but if there is a cheesy pun to use…
This print was created with the Xerox transfer method which uses cellulose thinners (bought at Halfords). The thinners melts the plastic based toner, allowing the print to be burnished with the back of a spoon onto another piece of paper (or wood, cloth etc.). The more toner laid down on the original laser print the better the finish. The result gives is a distressed, painterly feel to the piece which I have always loved. It can be a bit hit and miss to play with it until you get a look you are happy with.
One word of warning – the thinners is highly toxic so it is recommended you use a proper carbon filtered mask and chemical resistant gloves in a well ventilated space. Oh and don’t smoke nearby, unless you like a charred finish to your print – and your studio.
